West Olympia Sonic Drive-In on Cooper Point Road set to close Thursday, sign says

A sign at the Sonic Drive-In at 1303 Cooper Point Road SW says the west Olympia restaurant will close permanently Oct. 15. The general manager says a potential buyer is coming to look, so the business could still continue.

If a cherry limeade on Cooper Point Road is part of your west-side errand run, you have until Thursday. A sign posted at the Sonic Drive-In at 1303 Cooper Point Road SW in west Olympia says the restaurant will close permanently on Oct. 15, 2026, The Olympian reported.

"We are sorry to announce that this Sonic Drive-In location will be permanently closing effective Oct. 15, 2026," the sign reads. It also thanks customers.

Maybe not the last word. General Manager Pete Ybarra confirmed the closure to The Olympian on Monday. He also said a potential buyer was coming to look at the business, so there's a chance it could keep going. Sonic's corporate media office had not responded to the paper's request for comment.

Ybarra told the paper he didn't know why the location is closing. He estimated the restaurant is about 13 years old. The Olympian's archives suggest it has been open closer to 10 years.

The Thurston County Sonic story. Thurston County's first Sonic opened on Martin Way in Lacey in 2016, according to The Olympian, and the Cooper Point Road location followed.

Where to go instead. The closing sign points customers to the Lacey restaurant at 7746 Martin Way E. For many Johnson Point and northeast Lacey households, that one was already the closer stop. West-side regulars who have been grabbing a drink on the way to or from the Cooper Point shopping area will have a longer drive after Thursday, unless a new owner steps in.

We'll update this story if Sonic's corporate office responds or a buyer comes forward.
