Editorial: Spend a November Evening Peering Under the Pier at Zittel's Marina

On Friday, Nov. 20, the Puget Sound Estuarium lights up the water under the pier at Zittel's Marina so families can see the creatures living off Johnson Point. We think it's worth the trip.

Some of the best things on Johnson Point live under the water, and on Friday, Nov. 20, families get a chance to see them up close.

The Puget Sound Estuarium brings its Pier Peer program to Zittel's Marina, 9144 Gallea St. NE, from 6 to 8 p.m. The Estuarium's trained biologists set underwater lights that draw estuary creatures in where visitors can safely watch, and volunteer Beach Naturalists help identify what turns up. The Estuarium's list runs from octopus and anemones to sea stars and sea slugs, and it promises you never know what you'll find.

It's a fitting spot. There has been a marina at the site since 1925, according to a 1977 state Court of Appeals opinion, and the Zittels bought the land in 1957. Fifty-four years ago today, on Oct. 26, 1972, the marina applied to Thurston County to expand.

Tickets are $18 for adults and $5 for kids 12 and under. Households with an EBT card can register free by emailing the Estuarium's Program and Volunteer Director at [email protected] with a photo of the card and a valid ID. Pier Peer is one of the Estuarium's most popular events, so register early.

Bring the kids, bring a warm jacket, and come see who our neighbors below the waterline are.
